Porcelain Plaque
Painting
-
2025-2026

In my painting practice, I have increasingly sought to explore the material possibilities of different mediums. Inspired by my ceramic projects, I began experimenting with painting using artistic glazes on flat clay surfaces, bringing together the language of painting and the material processes of ceramics.

In 2026, the Chinese Year of the Fire Horse (Bingwu 丙午), I created a series of small porcelain plaque works painted with artistic glazes. Each small horse was fired at approximately 1230°C, where flame and glaze interacted in the kiln to shape their colors and surfaces. In this sense, they are literally “Fire Horses” — referring both to the traditional Chinese calendrical symbol and to the transformation of clay and glaze through fire.

2024–2025

From 2024 to 2025, I began to work more extensively with oil paint as my primary medium. In contrast to the clean and flat surfaces I previously pursued with acrylic, I became increasingly drawn to the richer textures and visible brushwork that oil painting allows.

This shift in material also brought a change in my approach to painting. Rather than striving for strict control over the surface, I began to rely more on intuition, allowing the process to unfold in a freer way and seeking a mode of expression that feels more faithful to my inner sensibilities.

A series of watercolor paintings was created during my travels across South America, as well as after the journey, back in my home in Beijing.

The works draw inspiration from the ancient civilizations and mysterious remnants I encountered along the way—pre-Incan pottery vessels, the silent and monumental stone figures of Rapa Nui, and the imagined landscapes of this magical continent as they continued to unfold in my mind. Observations and memories from the journey gradually intertwined with reflections that emerged after returning home.

Creating while traveling through South America was a deeply inspiring experience. The ancient and enigmatic things I encountered continuously sparked my desire to create and express, and have since left a lasting influence on the evolution of my visual language.

2019-2023

2019 was a year filled with uncertainty and unease in China. During that time, I spent long periods alone at home. Streams of chaotic information from different cities kept arriving, while I remained confined indoors, confronting an unfamiliar reality as well as an altered psychological state.

Within this environment, I began to transform my years of visual practice into a more direct, sincere, and personal language of painting.

During this period, I produced a large number of acrylic paintings. These images can be seen as projections of the external world onto my inner landscape: fragments of reality appear alongside dreams and nightmares, and within the noise and confusion there is always a trace of something fragile yet genuine.
